The next public Gauteng Snake Awareness and Venomous Snake Handling Course (happens on a monthly basis)takes place at Heia Safari Ranch in Muldersdrift on 30th of July 2016.

 

This course is a FGASA-endorsed course and is registered with the HPCSA, and is hosted by Johan Marais - internationally known herpetologist and author of numerous books on Snakes and Reptiles in Southern Africa.For more details please email Ashley ([email protected]).

The course starts at 09:00 sharp with a Snake Awareness, Scorpion Awareness, Spider Awareness and First Aid for Snakebite/Scorpion sting lecture that lasts around 3 hours. It includes scorpion awareness, snake awareness, biology and behaviour, myths, identification, basic first aid for snakebite and scorpion sting, medical treatment of snakebite and is followed by a written test.

Snake handling, depending on the group size takes around 1½ - 2 hours.

Snakes used for the handling session vary but we usually make use of the following: Puff Adder, Cape Cobra, Forest Cobra, Snouted Cobra and/or Boomslang.
